I drive past the secondary school where I met my mate Craig as a teenager. One of his friends asked one of mine for a lighter. Craig and I were the ones who supplied the cigarettes. I stop behind a bus in front of the park where Craig and I used to smoke weed and put the world to rights whenever his stepdad locked him out of the house in order to terrorise his mother. The underpass where I met Craig after he’d broken his stepfather’s nose for putting his mum in hospital. He downed so much cider that night he puked all over himself. The house where we stopped after nightclubbing, off our tits on pills, to sit on the sofa in the garden the homeowner had thrown out. Watching the sun rise and waiting for the MDMA to wear off, so our eyes would be less saucer-like when we got home. He was living with me at my parent’s house then.

I take a detour to escape the traffic building on Muller Road, cutting through the housing estate where Jimmy used to live. A couple of years older than us and already in the habit of drinking a few pints every weekday after work, and enough to cause him to black out on the weekend.

Despite our earlier efforts to escape reality, Craig and I are the only ones in our circle of friends who were able to avoid ending up in prison, rehab or dead by the time we turned thirty.

While most of our mates sought liquid oblivion, we had our own demons to fight.
